Janai Purnima and Rakshya Bandhan

Janai Purnima is celebrated during the month of Shrawan. It is known as Rakshya Bandhan because this celebration celebrates the bond between pureness and security. The celebration is observed by Hindus throughout the world.

Janai Purnima is a Sacred Thread Festival. This day Hindu males, particularly men of Brahmins and Chettris take part in their annual change of Janai and everyone who is celebrating the festival wrap a fearsome thread around their wrists.

Janai is a thread of cotton used to tie the chest of a Hindu male. The thread is only offered to males in a lengthy and impressive ritual known as Bratabandhan. What exactly does Janai Purnima

Janai Purnima is celebrated on Shrawan Purnima. In this year, Janai Purnima falls on Bhadra 12 2072. This date is with the English Calendar date of August 29, 2015.

What can we do during Janai Purnima

The day prior to Janai purnima, those wearing janais must make themselves "clean" by cutting or shaving hair and bathe. They go through a period of fasting and eat only one meal that are considered clean and no meat, garlic or onions. Prior to a major event, Hindus prefer to cleanse their bodies by their bodies clean by fasting. Foods that are savic are prescribed for every Hindu ceremonies and festivals.

At Purnima morning, people usually head to nearby ponds or rivers for a secret bath by dipping his head three times into the water. Then, they switch their Janai. Remove them up into pieces.

However , in cities there is a family priest (Pandit or Puret) arrives at the house. The whole family gathers around the pandit while he reads the importance and the stories of the sacred book (patro) and then performs an act of purification, which cleanses the thread and puts it around the man's neck and across the chest. When a priest is paid, he receives food and money. The money is known as Dakshina and other things are referred to as Daan by Sanskrit.


What exactly is Rakshya Bandhan Doro?

Rakshya is "to defend" and bandhan means "tie" also known as "bond". Rakshya Bandhan is an edging or tie for security. The thread placed to the hands is referred to as Doro. Some people even say Janai for Doro.

On Raksha Bandhan day male, women, kids and children regardless of their status or caste wear to a doro (sacred thread of color) around their wrists. Most men tie the thread around their wrists on their right and females wrap it around one's left.

Doro is believed to bring luck and prosperity, and when one believes that it is the case. Doro is tied in their wrists till Laxmi Puja day in Deepawali. The thread is then pulled out of the wrist and tucked to the tail of a cow on the cow day of worship (Laxmi puja) around October.

Hindu belief is that they need to cross the river Baitarni in order to go to heaven. The cow helps them to get across the river Baitarni by permitting the dead to adhere to her tail by tying the doro on the cow's tail in the morning of Laxmi Puja day.

Rakhi Day

The festival is also celebrated by the tie of a rakhi, or holy thread by the sister around the arm of their brother. The market is filled with various colors of Rakhi. The festival is similar the festival of Bhai Tika which is celebrated in Tihar to certain communities across Nepal. The brother, in turn, presents a gift to his sister, and promises to take care of her while she gives treats to him. Rakhi as long as they accept an ongoing obligation to protect the girl or woman.

Janai purnima as Kwati purnima or Gunhi Punhi

It is believed that in Nepal the special menus to celebrate Gunhi Punhi (Janai Purnima in Newari) is Kwati. The day is also known as Kwati Punhi in which Kwati is a soup made of various beans. Punhi is the word for the day of the full moon. Newar people also wrap sacred threads around their wrists that are to be removed at the time in Laxmi Puja, another festival in Tihar.

Santoshi Maa
